Imagine being Ukranian world music quartet DakhaBrakha, thousands of miles from their homes in Kyiv as they tour the world, wondering how their families and friends are making out back home.

But here they are in the U.S., and coming the Music Box Supper Club in Cleveland this week to share what they call their “ethnic chaos” sound. Founded in 2004 by avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art, their roots are in pushing people’s expectations. In addition to using theatrical effects, they blend Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian instrumentation into music with roots in Ukrainian folklore and theater. Their name means “give/take” and it’s a clear description of how they approach what they do.

The Music Box is offering a special Ukrainian dinner in the concert hall from 6-7:30 prior to the 8pm show, as well as their regular menu

Music Box co-owner Colleen Miller writes, “If you’re planning to attend, please do us a BIG favor and purchase tickets now. That way, we know where we stand. The less we spend on advertising, the better, as that revenue from ticket sales goes directly to the band. They are becoming the leaders in the rebuilding of their community, and tireless advocates for peace.”

There will be an opportunity to donate at the show as well. Go here for tickets.
