Drumplay Pays Tribute to the Late Cleveland Poet Daniel Thompson

Fri 5/20 @ 7:30PM

Cleveland poet Daniel R. Thompson (1935-2004) was a noted figure around town. He read his work all over town including in some offbeat venues, organized the first Cleveland Poetry Slam, published his work in the Homeless Grapevine, a paper sold on the street by homeless individuals, and in 1992, was named Cuyahoga County’s first poet laureate. He was known for his activism as well as his poetry, and would go out of his way to help the less fortunate, even though he didn’t have much himself.

He often performed with local world music/jazz ensemble Drumplay, adding his poetry to their music. Now, in honor of the 30th anniversary of Daniel being named Cuyahoga County Poet Laureate, they’re performing a benefit concert in his honor for the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless.

It takes place at the 5 O’Clock Lounge in Lakewood. They’ll be taking freewill donations.
