A Student Show by Any Other Name Is a Student Show at Bonfoey Gallery

Fri 5/13-Sat 6/4

Bonfoey Gallery’s next show has been given the snarky titled of This Is Not a Student Show punning off the famous Rene Magritte painting, “The Treachery of Images,” also known as “This Is Not a Pipe.”

The show is, of course, a student show. It features the work of 13 seniors in Cleveland Institute of Art’s Visual Arts Department, who are about to get degrees in painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture and expanded media. In their work, they explore a variety of themes including trendy issues of gender and identity, marginalization and representation.

The gallery tells us further, “ The wide variety of artwork and themes allows for interesting juxtapositions within the exhibition. One can see work representing the ordinary next to work that explores the absurd and imaginary, or small-scale depictions of mundane items next to whimsical panoramic paintings.”

The participating artists are Ewuresi Archer, Makenzie Byerley, JJ Elsass, Paxton Enstad, Liana Gonzalez, Eliza Karp, Meg Lubey, Howe Fun Lye-Starks, Lucian Mordecai, Jay Peperone, Alyssa Radakovic, Xander Ristofski and Sebastian Schenz. Read more about the artists here.

A portion of the gallery’s proceeds will go to CIA’s Visual Arts Department.  The show remains on view through Saturday June 4.
