Dobama’s “Life Sucks” Re-imagines Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”

Fri 4/22-Sun 5/22

American playwright and director Aaron Posner has a thing for Chekohv. His 2013 play, Stupid Fucking Bird, was a takeoff on Chekhov’s The Seagull, his own distinctive interpretation of the play’s issues. He gave the same treatment to Chekhov classics Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters, as Life Sucks: Or the Present Ridiculous (2015) and No Sisters (2017).

It’s the former that Cleveland Heights-based Dobama Theatre is tackling this time, already having Stupid Fucking Bird under its belt in the early part of its eventually pandemic-aborted 2019-2020. Dobama calls Life Sucks “an irreverent contemporary remix of Uncle Vanya. Egos class, heart hunger and souls cry out for meaning in the raw and hilarious re-imagining of Chekov’s timeless classic where a group of old friends, ex-lovers, estranged in-laws and lifelong enemies gather to grapple with life’s thorniest questions — and each other.”

The play opens at the Dobama Friday April 22 and runs through Sunday May 22 for a long month of grappling. Get your tickets here.
