Millennial Theatre Project Presents “Rent” in Akron

Fri 1/14-Sun 1/16

Fri 1/21-Sat 1/22

Fri 1/28-Sat 1/29

Based on the opera house repertoire staple, Puccini’s La Boheme, the 1996 musical Rent turned out to be a Broadway blockbuster. Written entirely (book, lyrics and music) by the late Jonathan Larson, whose sudden death at age 35 just prior to its debut added a bittersweet piquancy to its runaway success, it updated the story, moving it from fin de siècle Paris to contemporary downtown New York, replacing tuberculosis with HIV/AIDS and addressing modern takes on poverty and sexual and gender identity.

The Akron-based Millennial Theatre Project is kicking off the year by presenting Rent for three weekends at the Akron Civic Theatre’s intimate new Knight Stage. All shows are at 8pm except for Sunday January 16 @ 6pm.

Tickets are $20; go here to reserve them or call the box office at 330-253-2488.
