Maple Sap Buckets Become Art at Geauga Park District Show

Fri 1/28 @ 7-9PM

This year, the Geauga Park District’s Swine Creek Reservation changed its method of collecting maple sap to from using the traditional buckets to a tubing operation. That left them with a bunch of maple sap buckets to be thrown out.

But wait! The district’s Special Events Coordinator Teresa Runion (who is retiring this month after 32 years) came up with a better idea. The result is the Geauga Park District Maple SugART Sap Bucket Invitational, where dozens of artists have embellished the buckets and tuned them into more than 50 works of art.

“We should see lots of decorated and otherwise embellished buckets, as well as some pieces created from deconstructed or repurposed buckets,” says Runion. “To see artwork cleverly transformed from items that are no longer in use is absolutely gratifying, not only for the artist, but for all who enjoy the resulting creations.”

The show kicks off with an opening reception at the West Woods Nature Center that will include refreshments and old-time fiddle tunes played by Northeast Ohio string quintet Mr. Haney. The show remains on view through April 28, daily from 10am-4:30pm.
