Local Artist Shows Digital Weavings Inspired by Lake Erie

Fri 1/21 @ 5-9PM

Cleveland’s Meagan Smith calls herself an interdisciplinary artist, and indeed, her background includes painting and drawing (BFA, University of Akron, ’15) and ceramics (Tri-C). But most recently she earned an MFA in textiles specializing in digital weaving.

That will be the focus of her new show, Waves & Twills, at KINK Contemporary at 7th Street Studios. Her digital jacquard weavings in the show are inspired by the wave patterns, colors and movements of Lake Erie

“The activity of swimming, language of textiles, and optical painting influence my works,” she says in her artist statement. “Through the intersection of these inspirations, the weavings reveal a hybridized metaphor of the body traveling through a structural space, following phenomenological movements of resembled wave-like patterns. These liquid rhythms and pathways create perceptions as if one were undulating through an infinite void of echoes. Linear patterns and forms vibrate with saturated color and are meant to provide an immersive experience through their optical physicality.”

You can check out the show during 78th Street’s Third Friday this week.
