Les Delices’ SalonEra Explores Music of the Ottoman Empire

Mon 1/31 @ 7:30PM

Cleveland baroque chamber ensemble Les Delices has a good thing going with its Monday evening online series SalonEra, which airs news episodes approximately twice a month. They combine music with conversation and narrative, as musicians and musicologists provide background for the pieces heard.

The upcoming episode moves into some relatively exotic (to Western ears) territory. In “Ottoman Influence,” Baroque musician/multi-instrumentalist Daphna Mor, who has a strong interest in music of the Ottoman empire which occupied much of the Middle East from the 14th-early 20th centuries, guest curated this episode. She explains how the empire’s pinnacle in the 17th and 18th centuries, created enthusiasm for Ottoman art and music in Europe and how European musicians working in the Ottoman empire composed new works and transcribed the music into western notation. Also sharing music and insights are oud player Kane Mathis and Turkish violinist/multi-instrumentalist Ceren Türkmenoğlu, who music crosses over between European and Turkish traditions.

The program will feature music by Ali Ufki (1610-1675) and Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723).
It’s a $10 suggested donation; register to listen to the program here.
