Before any of us arrived in the Great Lakes region — long before there was a “Rust Belt” — the area was populated by a multitude of Native communities, with their own distinctive cultures and ways of life. Sadly, traces of them can be difficult to find now, despite the virtue-signaling “Land Acknowledgment” statements released by many organizations, such as The Ohio State University.

Learning more about these indigenous cultures and respecting their histories is a meaningful subsequent step. That’s the topic of a virtual panel discussion, hosted by Cleveland-based Belt Publishing. Belt guest editor Deondre Smiles will host the panel, featuring writers Gillian Joseph, Brad Kasberg and Katie Phillips, which will talk about how indigenous history and identity continues to make itself known in the region.
