Artists Archives Presents 50-Year Retrospective of Local Photographer

Fri 1/21 @ 5:30-8PM

Cleveland photographer Stuart Pearl was destined to be an artist: his father was painter/educator Moses Pearl, whose watercolors captured the bustling but decaying look of Cleveland in the mid 20th century.

Stuart Pearl was attracted to the same subject matter, but in a wholly different medium, training a camera on the city and its underbelly for 50 years. Now Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is opening a vast show of his work called Stories in Light: Stuart Pearl, a Photography Retrospective, that will sprawl over the entire campus including the Sculpture Center and the David E. Davis Studio and Gallery It opens with a reception on Friday January 21 @ 5:30-8PM. Masks are required but reservations are not.

“Photographer Stuart Pearl is a distinct product of Cleveland,” they tell us. “A life-long resident and second-generation Ohio artist, his work reflects the region’s shifting industrial realities, hidden revelations, and the people who travel its landscape.” This show “traces the artist’s trajectory from his documentary roots through his lavish urban landscapes, and illusory abstract studies. Though diverse in subject matter, the breathtaking images are united by a painterly attention to light and narrative, as well as a compelling desire to capture the texture of life in Northeast Ohio.”

The photos in the show include portraits, photojournalism and abstract studies, as well as intimate cityscapes of industrial Cleveland. It will remain on view through March 12.
