Praxis Fiber Workshop in the Waterloo Arts District is one of a group of area arts organization that offer classes, studio work space for artists and a gallery to display work in a given medium. In Praxis’ case, that’s textile art with a strong focus on weaving: if you’ve ever been in its space, you’ve seen the giant back room filled with looms.
Praxis is inviting those who’d like to support its work to a Holiday Open House called “A Fiber Affair,” an informal version of its annual benefit and pop-up shop. Guests can drop in any time during the afternoon. Executive director Jessica Pinksy will launch the day with welcoming remarks at 12:30. At 1 and 3pm there’ll be outdoor demos of the natural indigo program it created a few years ago where it grows, harvests and processes its own indigo dyes. At 2 and 4pm, there’ll be demonstrations of its TC2 Jacquard Loom in its digital weaving lab. At 5:30 winners of the raffles, which include the chance to win original art, will be announced. Guests will also have the chance to see its current gallery show, One Year, One Outfit, featuring garments made from regionally sourced materials and dyes.
Tickets are $50; money will go to expanding its indigo program, funding class scholarships and developing free community programming. Tickets include a take-home box with a tie-dye kit and dessert.
