Jake Blount Brings a Black, Queer Viewpoint to Roots Music at G.A.R. Hall

Wed 10/20 @ 8PM

Providence, Rhode Island-based fiddler/banjo player/vocalist Jake Blount, who grew up in Washington D.C., was originally an electric guitarist and seemed slated for a regular rock & roll career until he took a sharp turn. He developed an interest in acoustic American roots music and began to explore Black and indigenous music of the southeastern United States, including blues, bluegrass and spirituals. He became involved with the old-time music scene with his band the Moose Whisperers and, after earning a degree in ethnomusicology from Hamilton College, began to perform and tour full time and formed the duo Tui with Tennessee fiddler/vocalist Libby Wietnauer.

Blount is also an educator who teaches at workshops and camps; he released his debut solo album Spider Tales in May 2020. His bio says he “foregrounds the experiences of queer people and people of color in his work.”

This busy, versatile, multiple-contest-winning musician will be at G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula on Wed 10/20. Doors open at 7pm; show is at 8. Tickets are $32. Get them here.
