Johannesburg Genocide & Holocaust Centre

Mon 10/25 @2-3PM

As it prepares to open a new exhibit called Stories of Survival, featuring artifacts brought to the U.S. by survivors of genocides around the world, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage is presenting a monthly series about Holocaust museums & memorials around the world dedicated to reminding people of past atrocities with the aim of preventing similar events in the future.

This month, Tali Nates, founder and director of the Johannesburg Genocide & Holocaust Centre, will lead a program that will share viewpoints from museum historians, experts and witnesses in 10 different regions in a virtual program. “We will travel virtually to explore the history behind museum exhibits, discuss the nature of memory and memorials, and discover how the world remembers and honors the lives lost during the Holocaust and other genocides,” the museum promises.

Other participants in the program include Omer Bartov, a professor of history at Brown University; Faina Kukliansky, chairperson of the Jewish (Litvak) community of Lithuania, and advocate and chairperson of the Jewish community of Vilnius; and Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt, a noted authority on the history of Auschwitz.
