Massillon Nonprofit Event Explores Influence of Constellations on Underground Railroad

Fri 9/24 @ 8PM

The Spring Hill Historic Home and Underground Railroad Site in Massillon is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving a home and outbuildings once occupied by abolitionists who sheltered runaway slaves escaping north to freedom.

This weekend they’re hosting the third installment of “Stargazing at Spring Hill,” an event that looks at the confluence of nature and history in the Underground Railroad. Naturalist Ben Meyers and Spring Hill volunteers will lead a program where visitors will not just learn to identify constellations but also how slaves used them to guide them on their trip north. A donated telescope will help to see the constellations.

The event is free, although donations will be gratefully accepted. Visitors should bring a lawn chair or blanket. The rain/cloud day is Saturday September 25.
