Local Jazz/Pop Vocalist Vanessa Rubin Does Free Outdoor Show in Akron

Thu 9/23 @ 7:30PM

Versatile Cleveland vocalist Vanessa Rubin sings some jazz, some blues and some pop, and she’s built a career and repertoire over several decades.

After heading to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University, she moved to New York to pursue a musical career. She’s done pretty well: She’s released eight albums  including her latest The Dream Is You, which features the music of fellow Cleveland native, mid-20th-century composer/arranger Tadd Dameron, and performed with jazz legends such as the Jazz Crusaders, Toots Thielemans, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Hancock and the Woody Herman Orchestra.  She’s also known for her skillful interpretations of Billie Holiday tunes, a major influence along with Freddie Cole, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson and even Motown.

She’ll perform Dameron tunes and more when she plays at the Maiden Lane Outdoor State near downtown Akron. She’ll be backed by some of the area’s top jazz musicians: drummer Greg Bandy, acoustic bassist Aidan Plank, keyboard player Phil Jones, trumpeter Tommy Lehman, and tenor sax player Chris Burge. In case of rain, the show will be indoors at the nearby Musica Club. It’s free.
