IngenuityFest Returns for One Day Only as “Ingenuity at the Lake”

Sat 9/25 @ noon-9PM

Over the years, the Ingenuity Festival has repeatedly reinvented itself, as was originally intended. Launched in 2004, the festival whose mission was to promote the intersection of art and technology, took place in the Playhouse Square/East 4thStreet area when the area was mostly empty storefronts. It moved to the Playhouse Square/Cleveland State area, then to the trolley level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge for three magical and unforgetable festivals. It nearly petered out taking place in some warehouses behind Browns Stadium and the surrounding area before it moved to the Hamilton Collaborative where it revived.

Last year, despite optimistic plans, it was cancelled as COVID surged in the fall.

This year, the Ingenuity is once again reinventing itself to address pandemic conditions as well as expanding its outreach to the neighborhood. After four successful years at its home in the Hamilton Collaborative where it established its Ingenuity Labs and was able to built increasingly spectacular events right onsite, it’s still leery of hosting a large-scale partly indoor event with COVID arguing again, so it’s moving down to the lakefront for a wholly outdoor Ingenuity at the Lake.

This year, the event is scaled down from three days to one, and expands on the Ignite! Neighbor Nights it’s been doing all year in an outdoor space near the Hamilton. Although it’s unclear exactly what it will look like, it’ll be even more family-friendly and neighborhood-facing.

The event takes place along the east shoreline although its upside-down map (Lake Erie is at the bottom, underneath the city!) and sites that don’t correspond to the Metroparks names don’t make it clear exactly where. Our best guess is Gordon Park south of the Shoreway off East 72nd Street and perhaps some adjacent areas. They’re promising plenty of signage! Anyway, they tell you to “lace up your walking shoes,” which means the event will be likely be spread over the large park. Prepare to be surprised.

A scavenger hunt will get visitors moving around and exploring the space, which will feature art installations, a kids’ activity area and live music. Admission to this year’s festival is free.
