Grog Shop Celebrates 29th Anniversary with Packed Weekend

Thu 9/23-Sun 9/26

It’s hard to believe but the Grog Shop has been a major and influential part of Cleveland’s music scene for nearly 30 years. This weekend it’s holding a celebration of its 29th anniversary & luckily, we’ve arrived back at a place where they can host a weekend packed with events.

It starts on Thursday September 23, with Big Freedia, a legend in New Orleans bounce — that lively, distinctly NOLA style of hip hop. While identifying as a gay man, she performs as a woman and uses female pronouns, but unlike her inspiration New Orleans bounce performer Katey Red she is not transgender. Big Freddia’s distinctive music and style have travelled far, featured on tracks by Beyoncé and Drake. Me:You also appear and DJ Zoe Renee Lapin will spin between sets.

On Friday September 24, the club will present four northeast Ohio bands who perform variations on punk: Akron’s Actual Form, The Missed from Cleveland, Kent veterans Kill the Hippies and Cleveland’s “spazzy garage-psych” rockers Slug Fest.

Saturday September 25 will feature three more area bands: “hobocore crust punk” band Goddamn Gallows, with Public Squares and Hawkbaby. Finally on Sunday September 26, alternative hip-hop artist from Brooklyn via Trinidad and Tobago, Theophilus London, will headline, with Cleveland’s DJ Eso, Unknownphrazes and Junk Speedbat as the support acts.
