VIDEO: Amanda Wicker & Black Fashion Design in Cleveland

The apparel industry has a long rich history in Cleveland dating as far back as the 1860’s when our city was as one of the country’s leading centers for garment production.

But, did you know there was a fashion design school in Cleveland in the 1940’s?

Amanda Wicker was the founder of The Clarks School of Fashion Design and Dressmaking, located in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood.

The Cleveland History Center honors the works of this trailblazing entrepreneur their latest exhibit, Amanda Wicker: Black Fashion Design in Cleveland. This exhibit will share, for the first time, fifteen garments that showcase Wicker’s ingenuity and creativity.

CoolCleveland correspondent and columnist Dru Thompson took a moment to chat with the museum’s curator, Patty Edmonson about the exhibit, black fashion in Cleveland and more. The exhibit will open on 06.12.21 in the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing of the WRHS. View the video here.

Dru, thanks for this – fascinating and important work and thanks Patty. I have so little interest in fashion per se, but seeing this part of Cleveland’s heritage brought to light and forefront is vital, relevant and wonderful.
