Sat 9/11-Sun 9/12
After announcing a couple of weeks ago that this year’s event would take place live in September at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheatre, Tri-C JazzFest has just followed up by revealing who will be playing at the 42nd annual fest.
Music kicks off on Saturday September 11 @ 3:30pm with vocalist Samara Joy featuring Pasquale Grasso Trio featuring guitarist Grosso, followed by sax player Lakecia Benjamin and Pursuance, the Christian Sands Piano Trio, A Moment in Cleveland led by trumpet player Dominick Farinacci, and concluding with the Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra, hitting the stage at 9:15, whose high-energy salsa should leave audience members sated.
Sunday September 12 will open at 2pm with young Chicago trumpeter/composer Marquis Hill, followed by Canadian trumpet player Bria Skonberg, the Emmet Cohen Trio, with Cohen on piano, vocalist Catherine Russell and finally global music ensemble Banda Magda fronted by Greek singer/accordionist/pianist/composer Magda Giannikou, whose set starts at 8pm. It’s worth noting that 5 of the 10 ensembles are fronted by women, four of them 40 or younger. (Samara Joy is just 21).
This festival should have a significantly different — but equally enjoyable — vibe from the usual Playhouse Square event, held both outside and in the various PHS theaters in June. Most of the ancillary events have been sidelined.
They explain, “For safety concerns, we made the decision to move the festival completely outdoors and give fans and musicians ample time to be vaccinated. The Evans Amphitheater is perfect because it is a covered venue and we know the jazz audience is accustomed to going there.”
Day passes go on sale June 10 through Ticketmaster. Go here for more information.
