Akron Symphony Performs Free Gospel & Jazz-Influenced Concert at Lock 3

Sat 6/19, Fri 7/9 & Sun 7/11, Sun 8/1, Sun 8/8 & Sun 8/15 @ 7:30PM

The Akron Symphony Orchestra performs its first full concert in 16 months this week. It’s also the first of its Outside Voices series, six concerts taking place in outdoor settings.

It kicks off this Saturday June 19 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron, followed by two performances at Hale Farm & Village on Friday July 9 and Sun July 11, and finally three successive Sundays in August at Akron parks: Goodyear Metro Park, Firestone Park and Forest Lodge Park.

The program they’ll play features under-represented, diverse composers, as well as audience favorites, those summertime staples. At Lock 3, the Akron Symphony Strings will be featured in the first half, and the Akron Symphony Symphonic Winds will be spotlighted in the second half, during an evening featuring music by J. Rosamond Johnson, Florence Price, William Grant Still, Jessie Montgomery, Nkeiru Okoye, Gustav Holst and Omar Thomas. ASO Music director Christopher Wilkins and ASO Gospel Meets Symphony director Jonathon Turner conduct a program that includes The Star-Spangled Banner, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” and music influenced by gospel, spirituals and jazz.

All the concerts are free, although if you RSVP you’ll be entered in a drawing for two tickets to a regular-season ASO concert. Go here.
