City Club Forum Addresses Upsurge in Asian Hate Crimes

Fri 5/14 @ 12:30PM

After years of surging hate in our country, one of the more disgraceful recent developments has been random bigots beating up elderly Asian-Americans in cities across the U.S. It recalls the attacks on Muslims (or perceived Muslims) following 9/11. But then at least President George Bush, for all his copious faults, condemned the attacks. Today’s attacks on Asian-Americans (and others perceived as different”) have been encouraged by a bigot ex-president, especially since the start of the pandemic, which he frequently blamed on “the China virus.”

The City Club of Cleveland is hosting a forum addressing this issue, called” Stopping the Hate and Empowering the Asian American Pacific Islander Community.”

“According to new data from the activist organization Stop AAPI Hate, nearly 3,800 anti-Asian hate incidents occurred between March 2020 and March 2021, with 68 percent targeting Asian women,” they tell us. “Even before the pandemic, women of AAPI descent were subjected to sexism, misogyny, discrimination, and racism − and suffered in silence.”

Panelists will address the ongoing efforts to amplify Asian voices both locally and nationally, and the work being done to make their community more empowered. They include Antoinette Charfauros McDainel of the Ohio Progression Asian Women’s Leadership; Lydia Kang of the Korean Central Presbyterian Church of Cleveland; and Elaine Tso of Asian Services in Action, Inc. Ideastream’s Jenny Hamel moderates.
