Learn More About the Political Situation in Russia at Virtual Forum

Tue 3/2 @ 7:30PM

Even if following world affairs isn’t your thing, you’ve probably heard about what’s going on in Russia with dedicated anti-corruption activist and Putin critic Alexei Navalny. He’s been relentlessly harassed for years by Putin’s authoritarian government, and last August, he was poisoned and nearly died. He was eventually flown to Germany to be treated and recovered, while Putin’s government denied its involvement.

He returned to Russia last month and promptly taken into custody, as huge mass protests — and mass arrests — erupted across the country, despite the demonstrations being peaceful. While some considered his move reckless, he believes he can drive change to Russia’s politics, currently in the iron fist of Putin and his small circle of oligarchs who got fabulously wealthy on the backs of an impoverished population.

The next edition of the monthly series Happy Dog Takes on the World (still happening virtually) will explore Navalny and his movement, how much support he actually has, how Putin’s government is likely to respond and how the protests and that response could affect Russian’s relationship with the rest of Europe and the world.

Speakers include Kent State associate professor of political science Dr. Andrew Barnes and Indiana University professor of political science Dr. Regina Smyth. Ideastream’s Tony Ganzer moderates.
