The Cleveland Public Library’s popular Writers & Readers series, which brings in authors to address various provocative topics, returns on Saturday February 27 to address a hot topic: “Understanding Policing in the 21st Century.”

The two writers on hand are Jelani Cobb and Heather McGhee. The New Yorker’s Cobb, who’s also a journalism professor at Columbia University, is the author of The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of ProgressTo the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic, and The Devil and Dave Chapelle. McGhee is a political strategist who was president of progressive think tank Demos through 2018. Her new book The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, explores how racism is at the root of why the economy is failing people of all races.

The conversation will take place on Zoom, of course. Go here to engage.

The library is also trying something new. Each Writers & Readers event will have a virtual workshop to help steer participants through the topic to learn how to apply it to our local issues. The workshop for Understanding Policing in the 21st Century takes place Wednesday, February 24 as a preparation for Cobb and McGhee’s discussion. It will be hosted by local activist civil rights lawyers Terry Gilbert and Gordon Friedman. James Levin, founder of low-cost, justice-oriented legal firm LegalWorks moderates the conversation.
