48-Hour Virtual Music Fest Is Back, Raising Money & Awareness for Police Oversight

Back in March, just after everything closed down, local musician Meganne Stepka cast around for an outlet for herself and other temporarily unemployed musicians. That’s when she presented the first 48 Hour Virtual Music Fest, live on Facebook, where musician signed up for one-hour music slots around the clock from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.

Then she did it again in April. And again in May…. And while this pandemic thing dragged on longer than anyone expected, so the 48 Hour Virtual Music Fest goes on too, on the last weekend of each month, expanding its reach and finding new partners such as the Ingenuity Festival, John Carroll radio station WJCU 88.7 FM, and nonprofits such as the Hunger Network and Cleveland Rocks: Past Present & Future. And musicians, as well as other types performers, from all over perform alongside mainly northeast Ohio artists.

This month, the livestreamed event with benefit Citizens for a Safer Cleveland, a new coalition dedicated to stronger community oversight of the police. It’s aiming to place an issue on the November 2021 ballot to make the Cleveland Community Police Commission, formed in the wake of the 2015 federal consent decree, permanent, and strengthening ability to make needed changes.
