Grow Native Plants This Year for a Healthier Environment

Mon 2/1-Tue 3/2

Sure, right now, the growing season seems a long way off, but it’s coming fast — and now is the time to do your planning.

One thing to think about to beautify your home and help improve the environment is growing native plants. Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is here to help with its sale of native seed, plants, and trees.

“Native plants and trees are better suited to the local environment, establish faster and are hardier,” they remind us. “Native plants require less water, fertilizer and pesticide and can help to control stormwater and erosion with their long root systems. In addition, native plants are low-maintenance and the long-term upkeep is dramatically less costly than for turf grass. They also provide habitat suitable to native animals (birds, bees).”

SWCD offers six different types of native seed packages, with each providing enough seed to cover 250 square feet. Choose from Mesic Woodland Edge, Rain Garden, Ohio Pollinator Oasis, Butterfly/Hummingbird, Mesic Annual/Perennial Forbs, and an Annual Seed Mix. Seed packets are available all year round so you can order right now.

You can also order six native plant kits with 50 plugs covering 100 square feet: Butterfly/Bird, Prairie, Prairie Grass, Pollinator, Shade, Rain Garden and Wetland kits. Deadline to order is March 2; you’ll get your kit in early June in time to plant. Finally, they’re offering two native conifer species and 14 types of broadleaf trees with an order form going live February 2 and an order deadline March 22.
