Art Museums Plan Virtual MLK Day Programming

Martin Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama, by Dan Weiner

Mon 1/18 @ 6PM

Mon 1/18 @ 10AM-4PM

Area art museums are still closed but that isn’t stopping them from offering programming for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, albeit virtually.

The Cleveland Museum of Art will be presenting a MLK program online @ 6pm as part of its Home Is Where The Art Is Series, called “Becoming a Beloved Community.”

“The Beloved Community is a vision that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized during the Civil Rights Movement,” they say. “King’s Beloved Community is a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and loving your neighbor as you love yourself.”

The 1998 painting My Home Town (1998) by Cleveland artist Michelangelo Lovelace, which comments on racial segregation in Cleveland, is the inspiration for original poems that will be read by Cuyahoga County poet laureate Honey Bell-Bey and poet Orlando Watson. The programming also includes opening remarks by Olivet Institutional Baptist Church pastor the Rev. Dr. Jawanza Colvin and a discussion. Access the program at cma.org/digital.

The Akron Art Museum and the Akron Summit County Public Library will also present programming celebrating Dr. King’s legacy. That includes streaming videos throughout the day, spotlighting works in its collection that relate to the Civil Rights Movement, along with readings of work by black authors and poets on its Facebook and Instagram pages, with selections aimed at both adults and children. Finally, a local art teacher will do an art-making demonstration with items in the museum’s Creativity Care Kit, which you can pick up in advance for FREE. The programming will be presented on Facebook from 10am-4pm.
