City Club Forum Looks at Ohio Education Funding

Mon 12/7 @ noon

Few issues are as fraught and urgent in Ohio as school funding, 23 years after the state supreme court’s DeRolph decision found the property tax-based system to be unconstitutional. Yet the Ohio legislature has stalled on fixing it, making only minor tweaks as it devotes its time to unpopular fringe issues such as weakening gun laws and attacks on women’s reproductive freedom. It’s actually made the situation worse with EdChoice vouchers and charter schools, taking the money away from public schools, which serve the vast majority of kids, to benefit a select few.

The City Club of Cleveland is hosting a forum called “Fair Share: The Future of Public School Funding” to look at this issue and explore a new bill introduced by a bipartisan pair of legislators in November that purports to offer a fix. Panels include three state legislators — state representatives Phil Robinson and John Patterson, state senator Stephanie Kunze, and Howard B. Fleeter, a consultant with the Ohio Education Policy Institute. Ideastream education reporter Jenny Hamel moderates.
