Stay Up Late and Watch a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

Mon 11/30 @ 2:30-7:30AM

A penumbral lunar eclipse isn’t a spectacular astronomical event like the total solar eclipse in August 2017. It’s just a shadow on moon as the earth blocks some light from reaching the moon’s surface. And there’s one coming up in the wee hours of Monday November 30, beginning around 2:30am and ending as the moon sets around 7am. The top of the moon will appear to be somewhat shaded.

The Geauga Metroparks were planning on having a naturalist-led  event from 4-5am at Frohring Meadow. But that’s been cancelled due to the pandemic. That doesn’t mean you can’t set your alarm clock and go into your yard or nearby park to see for yourself.

“Though it won’t be the eclipse of the century, it’s still worth waking up early to watch,” says Geauga Metroparks’ Astro-Nat Chris Mentrek. “Consider this a practice run for November 2021, when we’ll get to see a much more dramatic, near-total lunar eclipse!”
