Morgan Conservatory Invites Public to Help Harvest Kozo for Papermaking

Sat 11/7-Sun 11/8 @ 10am-5pm

Sat 11/14 & Sun 11/15 @ 10am-5pm

The Morgan Art of Papermaking has embraced the idea of doing the entire process of papermaking in house — including growing the raw materials from which it makes paper. That’s what their Sam Varaboolad Garden stashed away in back of their building does: it grows kozo, a mulberry-related plant whose bark has long been used in traditional Japanese papermaking. It’s said to be the largest kozo grove in the country, hidden on the edge of AsiaTown.

You can learn more about it — and about the whole process — and help out too, as the Morgan invites interested members of the public to join in the annual kozo harvest, Saturday November 7 and Sunday November 8 and Saturday November 14 and Sunday November 15 from 10am to 5pm.

You don’t need any experience or background knowledge; there will be people on hand to share theirs. Stop by any time and stay as long as you want. But wear a mask and be prepared to practice social distancing.
