Even while people are going hungry in the U.S., we have a phenomenal amount of food waste. Its been estimated that as much as 40% of the food grown and raised ends up in landfills, which give off harmful and climate change-driving greenhouse gases (to say nothing of the waste from growing and raising food that isn’t consumed).

Rust Belt Riders was formed in Cleveland six years ago to address the issue of food waste in Cleveland. It started small, collecting waste from restaurants on bicycles (hence the name), composting it and selling the composted soil to gardeners. It’s grown well beyond that, developing its line of Tilth soils and recently acquiring a huge facility in the Valley View area where it will be able to ramp up its manufacturing.

Rust Belt Riders co-founder Daniel Brown will be talking about food waste, its causes and solutions, in a Zoom program sponsored by the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. It’s $5 for members, $7.50 for non-members. Registration is required. Go here.
