Learn the Long History of Cleveland’s East/West Divide

Wed 11/4 @ 7-8:15PM

One of Cleveland’s most enduring narratives is its east side/west side split. It’s less powerful today than it once was, with more different types of people existing on each side, but it’s engrained in our thinking.

Artists Archives of the Western Reserve is presenting a program that sheds some light on how far back it goes and why it’s so persistent. “The Infamous Bridge Wars of 1836,” presented by Cleveland Metroparks historian Judy MacKeigan will look at the controversy of the construction of a new bridge over the Cuyahoga, along with the demolition of an old one, in 1836, spurred protests and a battle between what was then two cities: Cleveland on the east bank and Ohio Cty on the west.

The free, online event is part of the programming around Artists Archives current exhibit Bridges and Barriers, which looks obstacles confronting people in Cleveland and how they are attempting to overcome them. To register for the Zoom program, go here.
