KSU Gallery Shows Works of Detroit Master Printmaker

Tue 10/6-Sat 1/2/21

Detroit-based Amos Kennedy is a veteran master printmaker, who is known for using his art to make social/political statements. A late bloomer, printmaking was his second career and he got his MFA in his 40s. His handmade prints and posters feature slogans, adages and quotes such as a series of quotes from Rosa Parks (“All I was doing was trying to get home from work”), part of a 14-poster commemorative series to the Civil Right Movement icon. Another series addressed the ravages of war.

But he’s not all gravity: another poster read, “FISHING: Give a man to fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and you’ll never see him on weekends.” Others have addressed dance, art and health. And he’s done posters for festivals, benefits, concerts and other special events. His masterful use of layered handset type elevates these posters to art.

The Mid America Print Council (MAPC) awarded Kennedy their 2020 outstanding printmaker award, which was to be given at their October conference, now postponed until October 22.  But Kent State University’s School of Art Collection and Galleries has worked with MAPC to give northeast Ohioans an opportunity to see Kennedy’s work with a show at the KSU Downtown Gallery.

The exhibition opens Tuesday October 6 and will be on view through Saturday January 9, 2021. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-5pm It’s free and open to the public.
