Ceramic Sculptor Displays New Work in Downtown Akron

Wed 10/14-Sat 11/14

Akron Soul Train, which provides short residencies to artists in various disciplines and showcases the results in its gallery, has a new project. At its new Capsoul Gallery at 191 South Main Street in downtown Akron, it will feature special projects and emerging artists.

For its first show there, running from Wednesday October 14 through Saturday November 14, it’s displaying the work of Maya Matthews, whose ceramic sculptures of heads and faces celebration blackness, informed by her own life experiences.

“Her pieces explore the healing, freedom, and empowerment of black people through representations of hairstyles, symbols, and expression,” says the gallery’s press release. “The emotional power of her sculptures create a pause in time, asking the onlooker to gain a new understanding of not only history but the true beauty of blackness.”

The opening reception takes place Thursday October 15 @ 11am-8pm. Timed slots should be reserved and masks are required inside the gallery. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday @ 11am-4pm.
