NO EXIT New Music Kicks Off Its Season Virtually With 90 Years of Avant-Garde Music

Fri 10/2 @ 7-8:30PM

We don’t know what the future holds for the 2020-2021 seasons of area theaters and music presenters, but for the time being, they’re kicking off their seasons virtually.

That includes NO EXIT, Cleveland’s small new music ensemble, which commissions and performs contemporary avant-garde concert music often juxtaposed with older pieces to make interesting connections. It does so by presenting all its programs for free in accessible community spaces.

“COVID-19 has forced us all to rethink how we live, work and go about our lives,” says NO EXIT’s artistic director Tim Beyer. “Taking all into account, NO EXIT will present a full concert season, whether it be online, in-person or a little of both. We are prepared to adjust as needed depending on how the situation unfolds in the coming months.”

To kick off its third season, that space will be ultra-accessible, namely, your home.

Beyer describes the opening concerts as “a program of stylistically diverse works that span almost 90 years of avant-garde music. Our program will include Heitor Villa Lobos’ Deux Chôros, a stirring and powerful piece for violin and cello; William Grant Still’s Seven Traceries, which is a mystical and elusive work for piano, and Sonata for Flute by Harald Genzmar, who is a protege of Paul Hindemith.”

It will also include Bell Threads, a solo piece for viola by Kent State assistant professor of composition Adam Roberts and the world premiere of a new piece called “Downfall (A Collage,” written and performer by NO EXIT’s percussionist Luke Rinderknecht.
