Learn to Plant a Tree for the Health of the Earth

Tue 10/6 @ 10AM-noon

Many of the things that impact climate change are beyond our control, other than our continued advocacy for more environmentally friendly policies and voting like the future of the world depends on it because it does (The last day to register in Ohio is Monday October 5).

But there are things you can do: cutting back on plastics, recycling and helping to clean up our beaches are all good things, even if small steps. Something else you can do: plant trees. Restoring our tree canopy, which has been devastated over the decades, helps trap carbon dioxide, a major contributor to the warming greenhouse effect; they also help reduce ozone levels in urban areas as well as produce shade to cut the impact of heat on asphalt. They can also shade your house, reducing the need for air conditioning.

You can get started at a free, family-friendly tree-planting event in Chesterland’s Orchard Hills Park, sponsored by the new Chardon-based group Rooted in Trees, the Geauga Park District and the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District. There, landscape professions will be showing how to plant a tree properly with hands-on demonstrations of such aspects as staking, mulching and deer guard installation  (good luck with that!). Each registered participant will get a free tree seeding like Bartlett Tree Experts.

Register by Monday October 5 to join the event. Dress for outdoors; participants will be expected to bring a mask and practice social distancing. Go here to register. Rain date is October 7.
