Discussion Looks at the Impact in Pandemic of Lack of Women Leaders Worldwide

Tue 10/6 @ 7:30PM

The United States, unfortunately, is not a world leader in elevating women to leadership roles, something that’s likely to take many steps backward with the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the elevation of a radical rightwing ideologue to the U.S. Supreme Court to take her place.

Last year’s rankings of the percentage of women in legislative bodies worldwide ranked the U.S. 76th, tied with Cabo Verde and Afghanistan. Central America, the Middle East, North Africa and western Europe made strides between 2008 and 2018.  But they still made up less than a quarter of the membership of legislative bodies worldwide early last year.

The next edition of Happy Dog Takes on the World will look at this issue specifically through the lens of the pandemic in “COVID-19 and Women’s Leadership Around the World.” As the impacts of the pandemic have fallen the hardest on women — in job loss and loss of income, in family care, in being trapped in desperate situations with no escape routes — they remind us that women are also only 10% of national leaders worldwide, and as a result of that, their issues are often regarded as afterthoughts or not regarded at all. The media, all too typically, is no help. This week The Guardian reported on a study that found “Female voices ‘drowned out’ in reporting on Covid-19.”

The panel assembled for this online event will ask questions such as “What is the situation for women globally? How has it impacted women’s political leadership? What will women’s political demands be worldwide as we cautiously move into a “new normal?” Will anything change?”

Panelists include Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls of the Global Fund for Women; Dr. Anna Powles, Senior Lecturer at Centre for Defense and Security Studies, Massey University; and Gina Torry, Director of the International Center for Dialogue and Peacebuilding. WCPN’s Tony Ganzer moderates.
