Canton Musician Brian Lisik Releases New Stripped-Down Record That Rocks

Fri 10/2

Canton musician Brian Lisik has been around the area music scene since the mid 2000s, both as a member of the band Giants of Science and as a solo artist with a string of albums, self-described as “guitar-driven power pop and pensive neo-folk.” They include Baggage(2004), Happiness Is Boring(2006), The Mess That Money Could Buy(2012), and Curtis Interruptus(2015) and We’re Sorry(2017), both as Brian Lisik & the Unfortunates.

Now he’s added Gudbye Stoopid Whirledto his catalog, with songs co-written by his longtime writing partner Steve Norgrove and production courtesy of Canton-based veteran producer Don Dixon, who’s nationally known for his work with such bands as REM, Gin Blossoms and the Smithereens. It’s officially released on Cherokee Queen Records on Friday October 2.

Although Lisik says the album is a response to his fans’ demand for an all-acoustic album, don’t expect wimpy music: he also adds that he “pulls no punches, takes no prisoners, and rips the roof off the joint without raising his voice.” The ten tunes use unusual, improvised instrumentation, which stands out strikingly in the sparse arrangements and gives which give the tunes a garage-roots vibe. Lisik and Norwood tackle topics ranging from infidelity to addition and suicide to how the media addresses politics, as well as lighter topics such as the road song
“Cheboygan, Sheboygan.”

“Steve and I trusted our co-producer to know enough to stay out of the way of the songs,” Lisik says in the press release for the album. “But we were still starry-eyed kids in his presence. I’ve known Don for probably 20 years, but had never mustered the guts to ask him to work on a record. I feared he would laugh at us when he heard the recordings.”

Dixon returns the respect. He says, “On his new record, Brian has captured the essence of a classic rock album while maintaining all the ragged glory of a home recording.  His voice may seem like the main attraction at first but the songs will get inside your head and stay there.”
