Two of the darkest days in 20th century history were August 6 and August 9, 1945, when the first atomic bombs were dropped over Hiroshima, Japan (August 6) and Nagasaki, Japan (August 9), killing a estimated 200,000 people mostly civilians. Those bombings launched the so-called nuclear age, casting the shadow of potential global annihilation over the go-go ’50s and fueling such organizations as SANE — the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. Today’s Cleveland Peace Action is a descendent of that group.

Each year, Cleveland Peace Action commemorates those bombings with special events. On Thursday August 6, the anniversary of Hiroshima, it will live screen a documentary called The Vow from Hiroshima, about a survivor of the bombing who became an anti-nukes activist. It will be followed by a Zoom discussion.

On Sunday August 9, it will host “Remembering Nagasaki,” described as “a virtual observance with words, images, music, poetry, lights, meditation, and inspiration.”

The events are free and open to all. Go to Cleveland Peace Action’s website or more information and to register.
