Author Looks at Changing Role of the Artist at City Club Forum

Wed 8/19 @ 12;30PM

Literary and social critic William Deresiewicz stirred up a shitstorm with his article (2008) and book (2014), attacking “elite” education and the upper middle class. His newly published book The Death of the Artist: How Creators Are Struggling to Survive in the Age of Billionaires and Big Tech is likely to launch many heated discussions as well.

In it, he looks at how the role and perception of artists has changed when it’s become so easy to create “content” and post it online, with an eye to becoming “viral.” For the book, he interviewed artists of all kinds to learn about the challenges they face in this environment.

Deresiewicz will join the City Club of Cleveland to talk about the issues raised in his book in a live streamed discussion, with University of Michigan professor Rebekah Modrak moderating. Listen to the discussion here.
