Independent movie theaters, such as Cleveland Cinemas, the Cleveland Museum of Art Cinematheque and Akron’s Nightlight Theatre have been keeping some money flowing in and some films flowing out to viewers via digital streaming.

Now Nightlight is taking it a step further. It has hooked up with Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron for “The Nightlight Under the Stars.” The series, which runs through September will screen classic films from 1974-2018, outside at Stan Hywets’ spacious grounds where there’s loads of room for social distancing.

This week, on Friday September 4, they’ll be showing Purple Rain, the 1984 film starring the late great Prince. On Saturday September 12, the film is Grey Gardens (1975), a documentary about a pair of wealthy, reclusive eccentric women, who were related to Jackie Kennedy.

Friday July 18’s feature is the most recent, 2018’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco, a drama about a man trying to regain his childhood home in a city where home prices have skyrocketed. In Saturday September 19, it’s 1978’s Days of Heaven, a romantic murder drama set during World War I, starring Richard Gere.

Finally, the month closes with two Alfred Hitchcock classics: Rear Window (1954) on Friday September 25 and Vertigo (1958) on Saturday September 26.

Masks are required; chairs are provided for first-come/first-served seating. Groups of up to four will be spaced. No outside food and drink is allowed; concessions will be available. Grounds up at 7pm. Go here to make reservations for the films you want to see.
