Learn How Scientists Are Protecting Ohio’s Greatest Asset, Lake Erie

Thu 7/9 @ 10AM-noon

For those who aren’t party animals and visit Put-in-Bay for the water and nature preserves found on South Bass Island, it’s a particular treat to take the water taxi to Gibraltar Island off Put-in-Bay to visit The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab, a research and education facility of the Ohio Sea Grant program. It’s dedicated to studying and protecting one of the state’s greatest treasures: Lake Erie.

In a regular year, tours are available every Thursday during the summer season, with researchers sharing the work they’re doing and even showing some of the animals (you can hold a snake!) And you can visit Cooke Castle, the summer home of wealthy financier Jay Cooke in the mid-late 1800s.

This, alas, is not a regular year. While the initial plan was to possibly resume tours July 9, it appears now the only event on the schedule is an open house in September. We’ll see. There have been COVID-19 outbreaks on Put-in-Bay.

But if the health of the lake is a concern to you, and you want to know more about the frequent algal blooms that befoul it, Stone Lab and Ohio Sea Grant will be holding a live webinar this week to share the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) forecast for western Lake Erie for 2020. Learn about the research and action going on regarding maintaining the lake’s nutrient balance. When you register you can also include a question for the scientist presenters.
