Do Your Makers Market/Flea Shopping from Your Home

If you’re like us, you probably go to the summer makers’ markets and fleas scouting out handmade and vintage finds to adorn your living space

Cleveland Bazaar had a full scheduled of twice-monthly markets at Market Square Park across from the West Side Market. Those won’t be happening for the foreseeable future. But you can go to Cleveland Bazaar’s Facebook page where they are sharing links for all the vendors who had signed up to be at the events.

In May, a new site debuted called Made Cleveland, created by Ash O’Connor. It’s been described as a local yellow pages or an Etsy for NE Ohio handmade artists and craftspeople — dozens of them, with more coming on board all the time. It features an array of items that will make your house a more comfortable home: scented soaps, butterfly mobiles, custom door wreathes, wall art, candles, decorative pillows and more. It also offers foods (such as jellies and teas), jewelry, clothing (lots of T-shirts and masks) and paper goods.

Jim Lanza is well known in the area for his art and photography. He’s a regular at local markets with his Cleveland-themed wooden display pieces, featuring both his own and vintage photos of northeast Ohio landmarks, as well as items such as coasters, posters and pillows, created by his business The Foundry. (His pillow with an image of one of the Carnegie-Lorain bridge’s Guardians is pictured).

He’s also promoted his own maker shows in recent years so it’s a natural transition to start his Cleveland Starving Artists Drive Thru. He not only features his own stuff (shot both in Cleveland and elsewhere), but work by artists with an offbeat vibe, such as Chris Yarmock, Angela Oster and Scott Pickering. Each week he posts works by a local artist on Facebook; claim one and the following Saturday you can drive up to his Gordon Square studio and it will be placed in your car. It’s a way to own distinctive artwork by local artists very affordably.

Some markets WILL be back this summer. The Avon Summer Market returns as the Summer Market because it’s no longer in Avon. It’ll be at Black Water Landing in Lorain Saturday July 18 and Sunday July 19. They too have an online component launched at the star of the pandemic, called Marketplace, where you can shop their vendors. You’ll find copious home furnishing and décor here, and a heavily emphasis on lake-themed merch.
