Akron Art Museum Blog Shares Fun Projects to Do at Home

Local cultural institutions, from museums to arts centers to performing arts groups, are a treasure trove of creative things to do at home if your kids are going stir-crazy with few day camps or in-person summer classes available.

Check out the Akron Art Museum blog for regular posts on things to make and do at home. For instance, their “Make Your Own Movie” entry sounds like it could consume a great deal of time and keep at least a few kids preoccupied for a while.

Curator of education Gina Thomas McGee explains there how to make an animated film using stuff you’ve probably already got lying around the house.

“If your house is anything like mine, there has been a lot more screen time than normal,” she says “With this project, you’ll create your own no-tech moving picture show using supplies you have around the house (or recently thrown into the recycle bin).

Among other things you need a couple of paper towel tubes, a cereal box (type irrelevant), paper, tape, some kind of drawing tools (markers, colored pencils, crayons etc) and a photo of drawing of a family member. Go here for complete directions, then Skype grandma and force her to watch it!
