Online Forum Explores the Impact of COVID-19 in Conflict Zones

Thu 5/7 @ 4-5PM

As we debate how to stay healthy and safe in the current pandemic, we should feel fortunate that we (many of us anyway) have the tools and the space to do. Just imagine what it would be like if you were living in a war zone.

The Cleveland Council on World Affairs will address that issue in its first virtual Foreign Policy Forum. Jarrett Blanc, a senior fellow in the Geoeconomics and Strategy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who worked in the Obama administration’s state department, will be speaking about how people in areas with large refugee populations and little in the way of state capacity are impacted, and how both state and non-state actors are seizing upon the pandemic to further their own goals. He’ll explore how the U.S. has reacted to the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan and how the pandemic could spread extremism and help or impede peace processes.
