Oberlin Faculty Explore the Meaning of Beethoven

Does Beethoven matter? If not, that’s going to shake up a lot of conservatories, including Oberlin’s where “Does Beethoven Matter?” is the theme of the program that kicks off Oberlin Stage Left: Summer Edition, a series of weekly performance and discussion programs.

In this one, three Oberlin faculty members — professor of piano Peter Takács, assistance professor of composition Jesse Jones and professor of history Annemarie Sammartino will mark the 250th year since his birth by exploring the impact the composer has had on music and the enduring appeal of his music, asking questions such as “What is a masterpiece?” “What is genius and who decides?” “Did Beethoven’s towering presence open or close doors to future composers?” “And what might be said about him 250 years from now?”
