Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Annual Benefit Goes Virtual — and Free

Sat 5/30 @ 7:30PM

Supporters of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes always look forward to its big spring benefit Nature at Night, its major annual fundraiser. It’s a time to celebrate the rescue of this natural setting from the predations of freeway building and provide resources for its work, such as the recent construction of All Peoples Trail which is currently open, and the just-begun upgrading of the Stearns Woodland Trail, which is scheduled to reopen in the fall. And while the Nature Center building has been closed, the trails have remained free and open to the public from dusk to dawn daily.

Obviously this gala isn’t going to be bringing people together in a beautiful outdoor setting at the center this year. Instead, it’s been restructured as a virtual fundraiser, with an online silent auction featuring specialty items from local businesses such as Zhug, Gigi’s on Fairmount, Luna Bakery & Café and The Wine Spot, and a live Zoom event for supporters to gather virtually. This year, it’s free to attend in order to increase the reach and diversity of potential supporters.

“We understand times are tough for so many right now,” says event co-chair Cristina Rcikard. “No level of giving and support of this community gem is too small. For those that had planned to attend the in-person event, we are asking them to consider donating the amount they may have spent on their ticket, a new dress or bowtie, or babysitter to help support the mission of the Nature Center.”

City Club of Cleveland CEO Dan Moultrop will host the event, which attendees are encouraged to watch from their yard or other outdoor location if the weather permits, use a nature-themed Zoom background if it doesn’t, and sip on cocktails and snack on appetizers, as if they were at an in-person benefit.
