MANSFIELD: Fools Die

The images of young blacks lining up at a shoe store in Atlanta (the majority sans masks) to purchase the latest Air Jordans; armed whites surrounding state capitols across the country demanding the quarantine be lifted; elected officials introducing bills in state legislatures to force the reopening of businesses — they all have something in common. As we old folks say in the black community, “They don’t believe fat meat is greasy.”

Their behavior is similar to schizophrenics who, after their medication has stabilized them, quit taking it because they feel so much better. But the fact is, the reason they are feeling better is because of the medication they were taking. Duh. Once they stop, of course they spiral downwards.

The reason most Americans don’t know anyone who has contracted the coronavirus is because of the measures governors have wisely taken in regards to shuttering non-essential businesses, social distancing and encouraging the wearing of masks. But some fools are demanding their right to die.

After a careful reading of the Constitution, I can’t find any clause that guarantees Americans to be allowed to be complete fools. But if they are so demanding, the rest of us should not fight with them, but instead accommodate them.

All bans should be lifted — at least for those Americans who are desirous of playing Russian roulette with their lives. But they shouldn’t be able to do so with the rest of us sane people.

Businesses should be allowed to reopen, but only for the employees who are willing to take a chance on contracting the virus. The people who wish to stay home should be allowed to do so without suffering any financial consequences; if they are currently being paid that should continue — no one should be forced to place their lives at risk.

Those wiser people would not go back to work until the medical experts give the “all clear,” and of course schools would remain closed until that time.

But those folks who want to go to restaurants, the beach, amusement parks — or wherever greedy businesspersons put profits over people — should not be prohibited from doing so. The choice would be theirs and we should not tear the country apart over trying to protect idiots.

After all, this is the Land of the Free, the country in which people are within their right — indeed, are entitled — to believe whatever they want, and if they don’t want to believe that fat meat really is greasy, they can go right ahead in their stupidity, and suffer the consequences of their rash actions.

We could then bury them with their Air Jordan’s in their caskets.

I agree that the fools are free to risk their lives to hang out with each other, except… those who will get sick will then put healthcare workers at risk. I’m fine if they want to risk getting the virus as long as they are fine with not going to the hospital when it gets real.
