Learn to Compost for the Health of Your Garden

You just missed composting awareness week (May 3-9) but if you’re a gardener, every week should be compost awareness week.

Composting has benefits on both the input and output ends. It’s a way to recycle what otherwise would have been waste, whether it’s vegetable food scraps or yard debris, such as leaves, grass clippings and dead plants. The final product enriches soil, adding organic matter and loosening northeast Ohio’s notoriously dense clay soils.

If you’re ambitious, you can start doing your own composting at home. Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District is hosting a series of free backyard composting webinars. You’ll learn the basic science of composting, its benefits and how you can set up your own compost bin or pile at home. Upcoming dates include Thu 5/14 and Wed 5/20, both at 6pm, as well as dates in June and July. Go here to see the full list of dates and register for one of them.
