Filmmaking Camps Offer Experiences for Teen Future Directors

Got a kid who’s passionately interested in film and hopes to become a superstar director or a respected film auteur someday? There are a couple of opportunities right here in northeast Ohio to teach them the ropes.

The Lakewood Young Filmmakers Academy Summer Camp is described as “filmmaking boot camp,” in which students will write, shoot and edit an entire film, guided by experienced industry professionals. Unlike the usual camp, however, which involves two intensive weeks of work, students will meet in smaller groups over three weekends in July, devoted to screenwriting (July 11-12), filming (July 18-19) and editing (July 25-26). While the initial promotion said, “The camp culminates in a Red Carpet Premiere of their film at The Capitol Theatre where their movie will be seen by a packed house of filmmakers, media, fans, friends and family,” we’re guessing that won’t happen.

The Cleveland State University School of Film & Media Arts is offering its Odyssey Online Summer Film Camp, a four-week interactive online course for ages 13-18 that will feature work in film analysis, story development, screenwriting, production and post-production. Instructors from the School of Film & Media Arts will give lectures and industry professionals will offer video message tips. Students will watch and analyze films, present their assignments to classmates via Zoom sessions, and create short films to be screened at on online film festive Friday August 7.
