Book Discussion Looks at the Healing Power of Human Connection

Wed 5/13 @ 6:30PM

The Gathering Place is a support organization for individuals impacted by cancer, both patients and their families.

But you don’t have to be impacted by cancer to join its virtual book discussion this Wednesday, held in partnership with the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Indeed the new book by U.S. Surgeon General under President Obama, Dr. Vivek Murthy, addresses something that’s on most people’s mind these days. It’s titled Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World.

Murthy relates how, in traveling around the country to hear about people’s health issues, he heard from many about how isolated they felt.

“I found that people who struggle with loneliness, that that’s associated with an increased risk of heart disease, dementia, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and even premature death,” he told NPR.

He also told NPR in an interview this week that the impact of our current quarantining could go two different ways.

“One path is the worrisome one, marked by greater loneliness as we spend more and more time physically separated from one another. But the other path is the path of social revival, if we recommitted to people and to relationships. We have the opportunity to use this moment to recenter our lives on people. And if we do that, then I believe we can come out of this pandemic more connected, more fulfilled and more resilient than before the pandemic began.”
